I was just wondering how people earn their "call signs?"  And any funny ones you have seen in the past?

It differs by community and squadron somewhat. In the fighter side and in the UPT environment it's done through "Namings." After a guy has been around for awhile at a "Roll Call" (typically Friday afternoon in the squadron bar) the person is put up for naming. They leave the room, people talk about all the incriminating stuff they're done (only 10% has to be truth), they vote on a name but the commander has the final say. They bring them in and give them the name. Some people come to squadrons with names already from other squadrons and they may get to keep that name but it's up to the commander of the unit.

Some of the heavy units do the same thing. Some don't have it formalized as much and it's earned more like a nickname.

There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

From what I've read and heard from current pilots, it's usually earned by something dumb you've done; usually in the aircraft.

No pressure.

You can look through here and see a bunch of callsigns and how people got them:

Call signs are normally based on something you've done, but can also stem from your given name if no good stories arise or it just sounds good. I have a few examples of those, but I'll keep 'em close hold for privacy. Most guys get 'em, as mentioned, for something stupid they've done while flying. Once you received your name after MQT, you will not normally be renamed (ever) unless you do something exceptionally stupid to earn a new name. Additionally, if you've carried your call sign into combat, you cannot be renamed at the whim of another pilot, it is yours to carry to your grave.

You'll see much more emphasis on the call sign in fighter communities. It began as a way to remove rank from the equation during flight and debrief and still works today.
