What exactly does AFROTC mean you have to be a full-time student to be in ROTC?  For example, at the moment I am taking 15 credit hours, however, I am thinking of dropping a 4 credit hour class which will put me at 11 hours, one hour below full-time.  What would happen if I did this?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

If you were to drop below this minimum, you would receive a "conditional event" from your PAS. Not a good thing. One is a warning. Second time around, your scholarship will be suspended for a semester. Third, well, you get the idea. What year in school are you? If you've just started, I DO NOT recommend dropping that course. You may want to use your "warning shot" some other time down the road (i.e. your last semester of school, take one class (Golf ), take your first conditional, and enjoy your semester!).

I'm an AS200.  I do not want to drop the class however, my GPA is a 2.85 and I cannot afford another C or lower on my transcript.  I'm going for pilot or nav and I am busting my ass raising my GPA and receiving a C would lower my GPA and make it even harder to raise my GPA.  Also, I am not a scholarship recipient at the moment, does that help me or would the same thing happen?

This is one of these things that you really should talk to your cadre about. As a non-scholarship student, your commander could either keep you in or kick you out with virtually no paperwork. If they like you, you may get a Form 16; if not, you could be removed from the program. AFROTCI 36-2011 is the specific instruction, but this would be a commander's discretion issue as far as I can tell. At any rate, you would be failing to meet academic standards by dropping below twelve hours, which could be a problem when it comes to competing for a field training slot/enrollment allocation. You might be able to do something creative like a online course or independent study to make up for the dropped class, but I think your best bet is to stick it out and try and get at least a C out of the class. A slightly higher GPA is not really going to help you if you get kicked out.

Thanks guys, my CoC had this to tell me..."You may get a Form 16 for not taking enough credits, but since you are not contracted yet, there really isn’t a penalty (i.e. you can’t get a conditional event)."

This being said, how ugly does a Form 16 for something like this look?  Do you think it would hurt my Commander's Ranking?  My CoC even went on to ask me when I am taking the AFOQT to get eligble for a Phase I or CLS, so from what it sounds like he doesn't have any plans to kick me out (knock on wood).

Well, I got a few 16s here and there in ROTC. One is really not a big deal, but don't make it a habit of getting a lot of them. From what your COC is telling you, I agree with your rationality (knock on wood, of course, STS). You probably won't get the boot. Stick with what 08Jay said: honestly consider staying in the class. If you want a pilot slot, then you're gonna have to bust your ass, and getting a B in one of your classes is one of the easier things you can do. Buckle down and study! If you really want to drop the class, however, talk to your COC one on one about the situation. Tell him/her that you are shooting for a rated slot and that you're committed to the program. If you come to your cadre with your questions and tell them where you want to go, they'll help you out. That’s one of those things that they’re there for.

A low GPA is not going to kill your shot of getting a pilot/nav slot... it's only 15% of you're total score. However, your Commander's Ranking (if it's low) WILL kill your shot at a pilot/nav slot, seeing as how it's 50% of your total score. Therefore, my advice would be to stick it out and strap down in that class... why not try to pull off a B? You still have half of a semester left to turn it around. Your cadre will notice if you face hard times and overcome them. They will also notice if you quit classes. Which do you think reflects better on you?

Once this semester is over, maybe you should take a harder look at the classes you're taking and the major you're in. My roommate in college did Aerospace Engineering for an entire year and had an even lower GPA than you before he realized that maybe he should take a different direction to turn his grades around. Don't set yourself up for failure by taking classes that you can't get at least a B in. If it's too late to change majors or the type of classes you're taking, focus on boosting all other aspects of your OM score - max your PFT, study hard for the AFOQT, accumulate at least 20 flight hours, do well on the TBAS, do really well at FT, and find ways to be involved in ROTC to boost your CC ranking. If you have high scores in all of those categories, you can overcome a less than desirable GPA. Good luck.
