Ok dudes, just be clear when you're talking... the Initial FC1 and MFS are separate things... (at least they used to be... but that was a few years ago).

Apologies -- The one site I was reading about this is that they do it on your trip to Brooks at the same time as the FC1:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2053514_pas...lying.html

Whereas the WantsCheck page states that FC1 takes place before OTS and MFS takes place after.

http://www.wantscheck.com/PilotSlot...fault.aspx

I guess this brings back up the fact that, if you go to OTS and then do the MFS and they find an issue that wasn't found at the FC1, you're done. WTF? I'm thoroughly confused. Oh well.

I took my fc1 back in feb.  They did both the physical and mfs at the same time.  From what I understand thats the way brooks is doing it now!  Hope this helps.

The FC1 and MFS are still two separate beasts.

For Active Duty the norm is as you said and is stated here on WantsCheck; you take the FC1 before OTS, and the MFS after (both at Brooks). It is very possible for someone to get DQ'd after OTS while at Brooks undergoing the MFS. At that point you are pretty much shit out of luck as far as flying goes. I believe the Air Force then tries to match you with an appropriate AFSC. I know it has happened before and am pretty sure it has been mentioned somewhere in the forms either here, at baseops, or airforceots.

The Guard implemented its new process to standardize the whole medical debacle. There was probably a larger percent of studs being DQ'd at Brooks(MFS) who had their FC1 done at a local unit vs the studs being DQ'd at Brooks(MFS) who had their FC1 also completed at Brooks prior to OTS.

From what B52 has said, it seems like the Reserves is taking the logical approach of having your FC1 and MFS simultaneously done before your package meets the board(consequently prior OTS) as opposed to the Guard way; sending a Commissioning Physical with your package to NGB and then going to Brooks for your FC1 and MFS.

Thanks, B52 and JGA. Yes, since I'm going the AFRC as a civilian, I guess I won't be in the same boat as the AD studs. I'll have to double check with the recruiter on this being the way they do it. I'm sure it is as this guy covers nine states for the AFRC pilot recruits.

Hey guys I'm new to this Forum. The process for me was a bit different, as everyones probably will be. I started with a reserve navigator position and they sent me to WPAFB, 1hr drive for me, to complete my FC1 physical. I had the LASIK checklist filled out before going, recruiter got it for me. After about a 3 month wait my FC1 came back stamped medically qualified for FC1 pending successful completion of MFS, oviously my waiver went through. Right after the physical I was offered a guard pilot slot which I accepted so now I will be going to AMS and then after completion I will go to Brooks to finish my MFS and then on to UPT. Just my .02.

eepilot -- I think you might have done it that way because you are Guard and not AFRC. It seems the AFRC does that a bit different. A buddy just did the "base medical" as opposed to going to a formal place to have it done which seemed a lot easier. He's ANG. It's already six weeks after my interview and I'm STILL trying to get into MEPS. What a PITA. (Lack of communication is 99% of it.)

Just to give an update and summarize what happened with me and the Guard side of things concerning the FC1/MFS and the process in general.

A Commissioning physical was completed at my unit's medical squadron and submitted with my package to State and NGB. After about 2 months NGB gave me Brooks and AMS dates at the same time.

This was my timeline:

Interviewd: 4 Feb 08 (Notified of selection the next day)
Commissioning Physical: 5 April 08
Physical Approved: 7 June 08
Package sent to State: 12 June 08
Package sent to NGB: 4 Aug 08
Package Approved: 18 Aug 08
Received Brooks/AMS dates: 19 Aug 08
Brooks (Both FC1/MFS): 25 Aug 08
AMS: 13 Oct 08

The biggest time sink for me was that nobody had a clue as to what the deal was with the new physical process. Everyone kept on telling me that I wasn't going to be sent to get my FC1 until after I was appointed (which is true), but what no one knew was that I needed to submit a commissioning physical with my package to NGB. So for all of you who get selected, make it a priority to get with your scheduler and have him/her schedule your commissioning physical for the next UTA. That alone slowed the process by almost a month and a half. Also, my physical sat around for a month waiting for a single signature. Once my package was actually sent, the process seemed to go without any hiccups. My POC at MPF was of great help and was keeping me updated about every other week. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I just got back from Brooks.  As a Reserve dude, I did my commissioning physical at a MEPS station.  Once that was approved, I was given Brooks dates to do the FC1/MFS at the same time.  They will not enlist me or give me OTS dates until I am confirmed by the AFRC UPT board (done) and the FC1/MFS is approved.  Since I was doing the FC1/MFS, I showed up on Monday morning (flew in Sun) and spent all day Mon and Tues and spent part of Wed waiting for approval to leave.  The guys who had the FC1 done already and only needed MFS showed up on Wed morning.

If anyone has any Brooks questions, feel free to ask.  I will not reveal anything about the testing since you're not allowed, but I'd be glad to answer anything about the process, etc.

I'm reserves, and just started UPT. I did my FC1 at Mcguire, and then after OTS did my trip to brooks. Not sure why it was done this way. My trip to brooks was short because they only had to redo the depth perception, color blindness, and map my eyes. Ohhhh, and don't forget the four hour IQ test.

They don't do the split FC1 and MFS anymore. They are doing it all at once now over the course of two days (and extra if needed). From what I heard, there were too much inconsistencies between all the bases doing the FC1 portions. When I was there, the dudes who already had their FC1 done came in on Wednesday morning to finish up their MFS.

If you ask me, that was a terrible way of doing things. Why would you send someone all the way through the FC1 and AMS/OTS only to send them to Brooks anyway to get DQ'ed as an officer. What do you do then as a reserve/guard dude? Just pick another job to do for the next four/six years? I can't figure out why they did it that way since they have to go to Brooks eventually anyway.

If you were non-prior AND you didn't want to stick around, a lot of the times, they gave you the option to bail. If you wanted to do some other job, they would try and find something for you (intel, etc).

Agree it sucks to go through AMS to get DQ medically. A few good dudes I knew had that happen. Sucks.

Good to hear they did that. I guess I just read about the AD dudes who got DQ'ed for something and sat there for many months trying to find something else to do. (One of their nurses told me that while I was there.)

Yuck. No, thanks.

Did you have trouble with color vision?  Did they just give you the Ishihara Psuedochromatic Plates?

I had no trouble with color vision.  They did several different tests/books.

Just take your time and listen to their instructions.  They won't rush you and aren't there to fail you.

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum, and I was just reading over this thread. It seems there are many ways they try to do the FC1/MFS process. I just talked to the Reserve recruiter, and she told me to go to my Guard flight surgeon to accomplish the FC1. She made no mention about MFS or any follow up. I don't know if that means there is a new FC1 that incorporates the MFS, or if she just failed to mention the MFS. She made it seem like it was a fast and easy medical to accomplish.

Gfisherx1 -- The way it's been described to me and I've read online, they are no longer accepting the FC1 done at your Guard unit since no one does it the same and they were passing too many people that eventually got to Brooks for the MFS (bascially en route to UPT) and weren't passing. Now they are bringing everyone down to Brooks for two full days which combine the FC1 and MFS.

If this is totally wrong, I'd love to know, but I am a Reserve UPT candidate (headed to OTS soon) and I went to Brooks a few months ago and did my FC1 and MFS in the same trip.

Good luck.

The other guy my unit hired with me is prior service and took care of his FC1 at his base. He'll still have to make a trip to Brooks for MFS at some point, correct?

Hey Guys,

I have my FC1/MFS coming up soon and I'm getting kind of nervous. I know that everyone says it's no big deal, but I started going through the med history stuff and I saw that they want you to list any hospital visits/surgeries, etc.

My question is, how serious is a broken hand with hardware? Pinky finger with a titanum plate and screws. I have full flexibility, no pain, and no negative affects.

Is this waiverable?

3rd question, how in depth do they get at Brooks as far as trying to find things to DQ?

I have heard 2 schools of thought when going to Brooks.

1. As far as they know, you are Superman and you are in top physical health...let them complete the evaluation and discover things.

2. Tell them eveything up front and they will work with you.

Any thoughts...?

Baron, I'm sure they will just check it out and see if it violates any regulations. My guess is that it won't, and you will be fine. I would research the regulations as well. They are pretty easy to find when doing a google search. That way, you can raise the BS flag if necessary.
