Hey guys and gals thought I would post my stats and see what your thoughts were on my chances. I am doing this from a mobile phone and was not able to update them on my profile, but dont fear I will as soon as I get back home from my trip. Slot Type Desired- Guard Degree- Aviation Science and Administration / Western Michigan University GPA 3.39 overall Flight Ratings- Private, Instrument, Commercial multi-engine and single eingine Flight time- 220 hours PCSM score- 98 AFOQT Pilot-79 Nav-43 Academic-58 Verbal-81 Quatitative-37 LOR's- Army/ Pentagon Command Sgt Major,Air Force Reserve 1Sgt., Army Reserve Sgt., Chair of WMU Aviation department, numerous other teachers and employers. Althought I feel like my AFOQT scores are low I think that the rest of my qualifications are pretty competitive. I have already submitted my packet to a local Guard unit to fly the C-130 and am now waiting to hear back on an interview date. Based on this information would you say that I am a competitive candidate? Thanks for the helop and as I said I will update my profile with these stats this evening to make it easier.

Don't worry about your AFOQT pilot score...they look more so at your PCSM score...which is a combination of your AFOQT and TBAS. I'm not too sure about guard...but I know you would get a pilot slot in ROTC (as long as your commanders ranking isnt anything retarded like bottom third). I know guard is a little more competative because there are less slots available. P.S. I graduated from Eastern Michigan University's Aviation Flight Program. I think C172s w/ G1000 flight director are quiet better than a Cirrus |

Hi, I was wondering if I could get some feedback on my chances for a guard/reserve slot. I'm about to finish law school and have a bachelor's degree in Aeronautics and Masters in Business. Willing to relocate anywhere and really want to serve. Tried to get into the JAG Corps but they are only taking 8-12% of their applicants and got turned down . Would love to fly. Just realized by looking at the earlier posts that the above information is incomplete... Here are my stats: Slot Type Desired- Guard/Reserve Degree(s): Bachelors-Professional Aeronautics (Embry-Riddle), Masters-Business Administration (Florida State Univ.), Law Degree (Univ. of Florida) GPA 3.76 (Bachelors)/3.43 (Masters)/3.17 (Law) Flight Ratings- Private, Instrument, Commercial (single/multi), CFI, CFII, MEI Flight time- 1420 hours PCSM score- 96 AFOQT Pilot-98 Nav-77 Academic-88 Verbal-83 Quatitative-82 LORs: AF Maj. Comandant of Cadets, Navy Commander, Marine Corps 1st Lt., Navy Lt. I know it's really competitive to get one of these slots and I'm getting close to the age where I won't be able to apply anymore (I'm 26) so I'm praying one of the units gives me a shot.

Hi Guys, I'd appreciate any feedback you could give me please. I am a sophomore in College now, looking to possibly apply for ANG fighter pilot slots for FY 2012 - how do I look? Degree (expected) - BA History, Dartmouth College (3.3 ish, hopefully up to 3.5 soon) Flight time - none as of now, likely going to have PPL by the time I apply AFOQT - not taken yet - SAT ~2300, I hear it is a decent indicator Resume filled with ECs, specifically a lot of leadership experience I know this is very early and general, but thoughts please? Suggestions?

my12- Hard to say before you've taken the AFOQT and gotten your PCSM, but sounds like you're heading the right direction with the leadership experience. You can also start working some strong Letters of Rec now. Also, PPL, while it certainly helps, isn't necessarily a requirement. Just make sure you log SOME hours. Try for at least 30 though... Mstill- Nice numbers and degree. If you have the resume/work experience to go along with them, you should be in great shape. Both - Typically, guard units like to hire from within when they can. my12, since you're still very young, you may want to consider enlisting with the guard unit for a couple of years, knock out your PPL, and apply then. I'd say being in the unit before hand double your chances as the guard is like a "good ole boy system." They like to take care of their own... On that note, if either of you know someone that is in the unit, try to get in good with them. If they know you well enough, have them do one of your letters of rec. They will already have credibility with the unit so their opinion will carry a lot of weight. Definitely try to go and do a "meet and greet" with the squadron you're applying to before the official application process. The guard is just as much about "will this guy fit in here" as it is about "is this guy qualified enough" when it comes to hiring. This is what i've seen from my experience at a guard wing. good luck. -jinxed |

For anyone going into the guard the most important thing is not only persistence but also meet as many as you can. Bulding a good relationship with the pilots, loadmasters, boom operators, personnel, etc. I am a civiliam who is going for hopefully anotgher interview this summer at a C-130 unit. I am fortunate enough to know one of the members on the board, who was actually my competition at a recent interview, he got picked, but was a loadmaster at the unit. I went to drill last weekend at the unit and met some of the pilots who will be on the board this year and like they told me, you experience, you leadership and flying passion is what they wanna see. Good grades in college are good, but that doesn't make someone necessarily a good pilot, or afun person to be around. If you have a 4.0 in college, your shit dont stink, you got a PCSM of a 99, you blew the afoqt out of the water, have 350 hours of flight time but are atotal prick, then your hosed... Can the unit drink a beer with you? Are you fun to be around, talkative, good personality? It takes the WHOLE package.... Go to as many drill weekends as you can. And the most important thing is if you dont get selected first time out, TRY AGAIN. They wanna see the kid who put his/her packet in more than once, if not selected, and atother units. It shows commitment and determination. And also, be content. If you go through interviews and dont get picked up and are age critical, then be proud of what you have done. Many people want to fly in the military, few every take the step to test and start the process, even fewer even get interviews. Just getting interviews in the guard, reserves, etc is a major accomplishment. Don't post up on this board, what are my chances..... Just take the test and go start the interview process. Let the boards tell you know, which they might, hopefully not. Anyway that is my rant. Don't give up. The confidence you learn about yourself going through the process will carry you through the rest of your career, whatever you do. Andrew |
