AA 70
GPA 3.3

I'd go ahead and retake the TBAS, bro. There's no true minimum, so you could still apply and be considered with a 49, but its probably not likely that you'd get picked up for OTS (if that's what youre going for). For reference, I'm a two time non-select with 90s across the board on the AFOQT and an 85 PCSM. Its pretty competitive right now to say the least. That being said, though, its not all about scores.

I couldn't get the link to work, so I'll just write it all in here.
I'm 25, and Active duty stationed at Offutt AFB, applying to fly F-16s for the 187th ANG Fighter Wing out of Montgomery Alabama.
GPA: B.S. Aerospace Engineering 3.75, Master's Astronautical Engineering 3.65
PCSM: 99
Flight Hours: 0 (that's the one big downfall)
AFOQT Pilot: 93
Nav: 96
Academic Aptitude: 79
Verbal: 48
Quantative: 97
(Update: I have gotten an interview. Hopefully I can come in first after the interview process.)
Thank you for your time.

Hey folks,
This may not be the right place to post this, but this forum is the only one that I've trolled so far that gets a good bit of reply action. I'm REALLY wondering what my chances are at getting into the field training.
I'm a junior in college and am about to start up ROTC Monday. The unit commander told me it will be a toss up to whether or not I get into field training so I may advance to the POC courses. My GPA is fair at 2.61...I really screwed up my first couple of years in college but the past year I've gotten Dean's lists to pull that crap up. My AFOQT scores represent me well...P-98, N-98, AA-94,V-70, Q-99. My physical fitness is almost perfect. With a month's worth of training I'll get a perfect score I'm hoping. The UC said (understandably...) that my ranking out of the other cadets will be low, just because I'm so new. He doesn't know me well, but I've made it clear to him how much I want this commission.
I've heard there are around 4200 nationwide cadets applying for 2500 FT slots this year. That means the bottom 40% are cut. I kind of calculated an "OM" score of about 70-73 for FT...NOT FOR A PILOT SLOT. Does anyone know what the cutoff usually is for FT slots? Thanks for any info. I'm really looking forward to this opportunity. |

Honestly, I'm not sure on what the "cutoff" is for FT this year as far as Order of Merit goes or even if they have ever posted one. But here are my tips for you: 1. Keep striving to raise your GPA, not sure when the EA boards roll around this year but do everything you can to raise that GPA by the time they do. 2. Volunteer for anything and everything that is presented to you from your Det, two reasons for this... one being that it shows you are dedicated, two it gets your name and face out there to the cadre. 3. Sounds like your in pretty good shape physically but make it a point to max your PFA, every point is going to count for you. From what it looks like to me, you still have a good shot at getting an EA but nothing is for sure in ROTC. No matter what though just make sure to bust your butt in everything because like you said only about 60% get selected for FT so I'm not joking when I say every little point counts. One last point I want to make... What you are doing is NOT impossible to do. We had a guy come join ROTC during the Spring Qtr. before FT and he got selected and ultimately ended up getting a pilot slot out of ROTC. So don't let someone tell you it can't be done because I have seen it happen. Good luck though and keep working hard. |

Cutoffs for FT are as rough as they've been in years--but it seems you already know that. But here are my 2 cents... The Air Force LOVES training slots. They do not love people who waste training slots, whether it be Field Training, Pilot Training, whatever. You are an investment into which the Air Force puts a lot of time and money. Your OoM at this point is really your commander's opinion of your investment value. Later, obviously it takes on more meaning as you go for rated slots, but for now, it's about going to FT or not going to FT. Looking at your GPA, your Commander might decide that you are borderline and a liability, but looking at your AFOQT scores I would think quite the opposite. At this point, nailing your PFA is crucial. If your Commander sees that you are on the Dean's list with your GPA coming up, you max your PFA or do really well on it, and your AFOQT scores are stellar(which they are), he will without a doubt make sure you get to Field Training. So though you haven't been in your detachment very long and haven't had a lot of time to prove yourself, you can easily overcome that at this point if you put up good numbers and continue to show motivation. (Obviously you have spoken to your Cadre at length and made they effort to get online for help--that's a winning attitude.) There is one caveat however, and that's FTP. You still have to go through Field Training Prep I would assume, which will be tough seeing that you just jumped into the program. You need to put everything you aren't using to bump your GPA to look good in FTP. I am running FTP for my det this year actually, so if you have any questions about that you can PM me or we can start/revive an FT topic so that it is public info for everyone else who lurks around this site. And at this point coming in late, unless you take names at FT and break the bank on the TBAS, a pilot slot is going to be pretty difficult. There are ways to get around that but it depends on your scholarship status and major. I actually extended my major and extra year banking on getting a scholarship to pay for the extra year--worked out and it has given me a lot of time to establish myself in the det. Just a thought--hope this last piece wasn't too off topic. |

Thanks for this information UPTgoal and matt. I'm hoping you're right matt, and that my UC will see how badly I want this opportunity. I think I'm a really bright guy, but just got my timing all wrong at a bad spot in my life. If I'm given the chance, I will succeed.
I'm actually also going to be extending my major a bit. I will be in an extra year (so two more years to go!) and will graduate with 3 B.S. Biological Engineering degrees (agricultural, environmental, and bioprocessing) as well as 2 minors including the Aerospace Studies. If I bust my butt I'll also have the maximum of 12 hours of credit that can transfer from my undergrad career to my graduate curriculum. The UC advised if I get to this point, I can take an Education Delay from entering the Air Force full time, and finish my masters in one more year (since apparently they're going to start stretching jobs out for new ROTC graduates anyway). I hope this all works out!!
Please PM me if you can about any FT tips and FTP tips you can give me! I'm gonna go do some push ups. |

The numbers fluctuate pretty regularly, but I have heard nothing that would indicate a significant "cut back" this year. Word is the fighter pipeline is actually opening up a little with the UAV track dropping but much like backed up traffic you don't feel the green light until quite a bit later. Your chances look good pending your Commander's Ranking and Field Training score. |

That's a little more comforting. I appreciate the insight, Matt. I feel pretty confident that I'm in the top third of my class at my Det (possible top 3) and I was top third at field training. I saw your were ROTC. What Det are you from? |

I'm Det 005 in Auburn, Alabama. So Field Training was just a nice little 40 minute drive to Maxwell. Top third at FT is good--and if you're top third in your class you shouldn't have much difficulty. Top three would be even better. If I wasn't scared of getting someone's hopes up I'd say you were on lock-- Where are you at, by the way?

I hear ya. KC-10 would be the ideal job for me. Anything heavy would be nice but I would prefer tankers. I hear the date for slot release is 19 Feb. Hopefully they will stick to that date. Getting pretty anxious. Haha. |
