So thanks to the marvelous website of youtube, and my ever increasing boredom at work, I decided to to type out the step by step process of how to create free ringtones for the iPhone usnig songs you already have in you iTunes library. Ringtone formats seem standard so the songs created would probably be compatible with other phones, it's just getting them on the phone that you'd have to figure out on your own. If your like me, you get bored with ringtones and hate paying the $3 or $4 which is why i decided to do this. First, you'll need iPhone software update 2.0 or greater and I believe iTunes version 8.0 or greater. Anyway, here's how to do it....

IF YOUR USING VISTA

1) If your using vista, simply click Start then type 'folders' in the search bar. the results should show 'Folder Options,' open up this folder.

IF YOUR USING XP

1) Go to 'My Music,' Tools>>Folder Options, click on the 'View' tab

2) make sure the box associated with 'Hide extensions for known file types' is NOT checked and hit OK

3) Ringtones can be a max of 40 secs, so in iTunes, play a song you want to make a ringtone of, and note the start and stop time you'd like the ringtone to be.

4) Right click the song, click in Get Info>>Options, and type in the start and stop times while making sure the two corressponding boxes are checked. Click Ok

5) Right click the song again and click on 'Create AAC Version' (or something to that effect). Wait a few seconds and you will see a copy of that song shortened to the 40 secs appear above (or below) the original song.

*Once the AAC version is created you may want to go back to the start/stop time of the original and restore it to full length, otherwise it will only play the time indicated. However you can do this later if you prefer.

6) Right click the new AAC version and click on Open in Windows Explorer, and it should bring up a new window with the AAC song in it.

7) Now, you'll notice the song is in .m4a format. Right click the song again, choose Rename, and change the format from .m4a to .m4r. You'll get some prompt saying you cant play the song/format, but just hit accept anyway.

8) Once you've done that, it's my preference to copy and paste the new .m4r song into a new folder which I simply titles 'Ringtones' in order to keep seperate from other music. Also, this allows me to delete the AAC version from my normal library and not have to hear a random 40 sec clip if i'm listening to the music.

9) In iTunes, click File>>Add File to Library then from the folder storeing the ringtone, select the new ringtone and add it. You'll notice a new folder titled ringtone will automatically appear in the left pane of your iTunes.

10) from there, just sync your iPhone and the ringtone will appear under the Sound portion of your Settings.

Hopefully i didn't miss a step, so let me know if this doesnt work and I'll go thorugh it again with my own comp when I get a chance. I know this all seems like a lot of steps and a lot of work, but trust me, do it once or twice and it takes you less than a minute to do it all. If you a Mac user, sorry, ipods/iphones are about as Mac as I get and can't even imagine what extra crap you have to go through without the convenience of a right clicker.

Oh snap...an iPhone thread.  I'm in and ready to pay homage.

Sent from my iPhone

Edit:  This might make a good general Iphone thread.  For example, I suggest looking out for the release of the Sling Player for Iphone Application which allows watching and controlling your TiVo/Dish/DVR on your Iphone through the internet.  If you don't know about sling players they're SWEET when you go TDY a lot.

Until the Sling Player gets released, however, the ITV application is very good (especially if you have TiVo and NetFlix).

Mint.Com makes a great money managment app and the Bloomberg app is great if you're in the market.

I also use the New York Times and AP Mobile apps to read the news (I tried putting Fox News apps on there but the acid of retardation melted my Iphone and I had to get another one).

Stanza is another great app for reading books on your Iphone (many are free...but you can buy and download best sellers, as well.  Yesterday I bought Cobra II on it just so I can quote it easily in conversation).

And I also bought BibleReader and about 7 translations (including Hebrew and Greek) of the Bible from OliveTree.Com which is outstanding if you're into studying the Bible.  LIke Stanza you can bookmark easily and you can cycle through the translations and the orginal languages quickly.

And of course...the Constitution App is awesome.  In addition is a free "Famous Documents" app that contains the Federalist Papers, the Magna Carta, Paine's Common Sense, and about 20 other documents.

Another great Iphone App is the "USA Forces" App for 99 cents. It has a shit ton of useful military information including the full UCMJ, Code of Conduct, Oaths, a bunch of documents and speeches, pictures of every ribbon/medal and the regulation stating what the requirements are, all the ranks for every service, and a list of military bases and contact information. It's money.

Yea I saw that one, definitely plan on getting it. Any other iPhone users on this site with good app suggestions? There's no way Ryno and I are the only ones! I bought the game app "shooter" it's pretty badass the way it works with accelerometer, also the USAtoday crossword app is awesome. You can dload any puzzle from any day, past and present, going back a couple years. Well worth the the $5 imo.

Hell ya! I like for CBs that u can take any song on itunes or any song on your computer and edit it to anywhere and any length within the song and make it a ringer. I'm currently rocking the chorus from dos gringo's "I'm a pilot" as my ringer. One thing I don't like is the huge auto Vipers block that sprint and BB put on the end of every post compared to just how yours just says sent from the me phone. ** Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone with SprintSpeed

Dude, I'm pretty sure there's a way to get ride of your sig block on your BB. If you go into your personal email settings, it should have it in there, and you can delete. If you can't find it, you can always either call Sprint or RTFM.

For BlackBerry (and probably iPhone), USAA has a nice little app that you can check all of your accounts with, and even pay your bills. Pretty handy.

Quatro,

checked out that app, does this app come in handy for AF pilots at any point during mission planning or do you use it more as an informative app on the general status of airports your flying too when you fly civilian? Just a curiosity question since it seems to me that all your info is going to be up to date and accurate when planning through your squadron. Basically, could you elaborate on it more?

I use it regularly, but not really IN the squadron that much (for the reasons you said).

However, I use it the night before just to check up on how things will look in the morning. And, when it really comes in handy is during those real early wake ups -- and I see that the field is socked in or something that way I know if I really need to get up at the ass crack of dawn to go mission plan or sleep it away.

It's also good for cross country.

Hope that answered your question some. None of the information that you get from this app is any different than just doing your normal mission planning. In most respects, a TAF is a TAF, this just changes the way you get access to it.

AT&T sucks balls though.  I'll be glad when they get tossed.  Fuckers say you have unlimited data with the Iphone...then the SlingerPlayer app came out (another awesome toy) so you can watch your TV and use your TiVo right from your Iphone but despite it working on the 3G network they wouldn't allow that.  Have to be connected WiFi because they said it would use too much bandwidth.  From what I understand though AT&T allows the SlingPlayer app on other phones on their same network to play over 3G but the Iphone market was too big.

AT&T doesn't support internet tethering either. 11 of the 22 companies allow the iPhone to be plugged into a computer and you can stream internet to your comp from the phone.

If only AT&T didn't suck @$$...

Christ Ryno why are you ponying up $700 bucks for it?! I know the 32Gb is like $3-400, are you renewing a plan or paying a fee for buying the new phone before your contract on your old one was out? My iPhone, just a few months old now, is having pockets of pixels blow out on the screen and its obnoxious as hell. I went to a store while in KC and he said I could get it replaced since its still under warranty, but I had to make an appointment which I didnt have, nor the time to make one before I came back to Columbus. I'm passing through on my way back from IFS and am gonna try and finnagle a way to get it replaced with the new 3G S since its actually cheaper than what I paid for on my current one (prayers!).

It appears that current 3G owners that are not eligible to upgrade phones either have the option to purchase the new IPhone at 699 or wait for a long time. I don't like waiting and I'm married to a rich lawyer so I figured what the hell. At the end of the day, I think the Iphone is worth it anyway. It's more like a laptop than a phone and I'll gladly pay 700 bones for it.
