I have a school date of Jan. 11th 2009. I don’t want to get there and find out I could have made things easier. I know they have changed a bit after sending the reservist to OTS and being guard-only now. Has anybody been through after they changed? I want to know if we can bring a few things if anybody recalls.
1) Can we bring Chlorofram shoes for our blues? If not how big are they on the shine? Just got them and have not shined them up yet.
2) Can we where the new boots with the BDUs being that this is authorized by AF regulation or do they want you to stay in black boots with BDUs?
3) Did anybody take an I-pod for the down time or for their personal PT?
4) Is it practical to take your own Lap-top, now that flash drives are not allowed on military computers?
5) Did any Guard members show up with just the two issued BDU uniforms? It would seem that with only two you would never have one in your locker for inspection. This could be good or bad, so I wanted to know if anyone has done that.
6) Can you get away with just one ribbon rack and blue with white letter name tag? It says to have two. |

Great Questions! I will be getting dates for
AMS here shortly and these are all things I had on my radar to try and figure
out...Anybody with answers to these questions would be great and would be good
gouge for anyone in the WC community looking guard or going to AMS in the
future...

Well I went a year ago, so I don't know how valid any of this will be. I went January of last year and they weren't sending reservists back then either, so that isn't any different. Corfram shoes are fine, but they'll keep you from getting a "sharp" during an inspection. This is meaningless bullshit. Bring them. I didn't and ended up buying some there. I don't know anything about the current boot uniform combinations. We had to wear black boots but we had no ABUs. You can take your ipod and keep it in your security drawer I guess but you probably won't ever use it. There really isn't much down time until the very end and I don't think they let you PT with it on anyhow. Laptop is a big thumbs up. Almost everyone had one and they saw a lot of use. Very handy when your roommate is bogarting the damn computer to work on a memo or presentation. I think I was issued 3 sets of BDU's. Whatever my unit gave me is what I brought. I only had one ribbon rack but two nametags. I never needed two.
Good luck. Its an obnoxious waste of 6 weeks but it’s really no big deal. Get through it and move on to the next step.

Got a few questions about AMS, I'm ready to go, just waiting on class dates. 1. I've heard and read a lot about the Patriot Challenge, can anyone answer how long does it last and when does it fall into the 6 weeks of training? 2. Is there any time spent in Chem Gear during AMS?? 3. I can't find my all weather coat, got it 20 years ago in basic training, it states it is required. If I purchase my own is there a difference between the enlisted and officer style, like there is with the service coats? I'll check with my home unit first to see if they issue them, thought I had it when I was putting in my AMS issue at supply last UTA. 4. For folks like us who will fly in to Knoxville, is there a place for us to store of civilian clothes and suitcase? It sounds like those who drive use their car for storage. |

What is the ribbon rack? Thought I had everything but wasn't given one of those by clothing issue at my unit. Can they be purchased at Mcghee-Tyson? Unfortunately I don't have another drill weekend in Montgomery before driving up to Knoxville, kind of out of the way for something so small. Anybody else have 16 March AMS date? |

It was about half way thru for us. Only lasted 2-3 days. I cant remember
2. Is there any time spent in Chem Gear during AMS??
Not when I went in 2006.
3. I can't find my all weather coat, got it 20 years ago in basic training, it states it is required. Are you talking about the BDU Field Jacket? Nothing different. Or are you talking about the blue trench coat? again, nothing different.
4. For folks like us who will fly in to Knoxville, is there a place for us to store of civilian clothes and suitcase? It sounds like those who drive use their car for storage.
There is a small storage closet, but you won't have access to it while you're in AMS.

The ribbon rack is all the ribbons you wear on your service dress. If you just enetered the military as a civilian and AMS is basically the first thing youve done in the military, you don't have any ribbons right now so you don't have to worry about it. You'll wear the ribbons when you commission. |

your unit is required to give you a new initial issue for officers so you should get everything brand new. |

Yo I'll be there for the 16 March class. Flying in Sat afternoon at 2:30. For those of you showing up on Sat do you know where we stay Sat night? Can do we have a place on the AMS campus, do they send us somewhere else, or are on our own for showing up a day early? |

You can pick up your key on Saturday and stay in your room. I got my entire room set up and then read the operating instructions all day Sunday. |

I have a question about the ABU. I only have two ABUs. Is that going to be enough? Also, do we keep the same rank on our ABU or do we show up with no rank on the uniforms? |

My unit issued me 2 ABU's. According to the website for AMS they suggest bringing 3 so I bought a 3rd set. I guess you could get by with 2, since that is what was issued. Do you have a class date yet? While I was outprocessing this UTA a few folks were asking if I did my annual PFT within the last 90 days (mine last one was July '08). I know we do the PFT the first day of training, can anyone answer if you needed to provide proof of an annual PFT dated within 90 days? Are contacts still fine? On one of the threads I saw they were fine a few classes ago, so I plan on bringing contacts, along with my glasses. |

I outprocessed today and I have not done a PFT since getting
hired...I hope they don't need proof. From my understanding we do a PFT
day one or two and if you fail you go home which I would hope was the
case. |

Can any recent grads give any insight as to what a typical day is like during the first couple weeks. The first day, I'm sure is all yelling/inprocessing/weighing in/PFT etc... but starting Tues-Fri, is it mainly classroom instruction during the duty day, with the yelling/pushups/flutter kicks etc... between classes and studying during the evening?? I know we'll find out next week, but just curious just the same.

It's a few years old, but most of the first few weeks stays the same - read this article: http://www.wantscheck.com/PilotSlotResources/GuardReserveAMS/tabid/301/Default.aspx That should answer most of your questions and at least give you some insight to what to expect. They change things up a lot, but there's only so much you can change. I realize this is probably too little too late, but at least I tried. How about, when you get back you update the article at the link above to make it more current for guys like yourself that are interested in finding out about AMS? |
