Can anyone shed some light on the lifestyle of ANG/AFRES Herc drivers?  How they differ from AD, deployment cycles, TDYs etc...

Depends on the unit. I can only speak of ANG, but depending on where you are coming in from you'll either love it or hate it.....

What kind of elaboration are you looking for? I don't know what AD is like as I have never been there, but I know that there are two kinds of Guard Units in my experience. The ones that know they are Guard Units, act like Guard Units and do a damn good job with their mission because of it, versus the Guard Units that get all tied up in trying to convince the world they are NOT a Guard Unit. They usually spend more time stumbling over there own hypocracy. Does that help? It really depends on the unit, as with AD I'm sure.

I agree that it depends on the unit. As far as deployments, most units are currently on an 18 month AEF cycle. We have been sharing it with 3 other units and it has allowed us to break the deployment into 4 six week deployments. I'm told that is going to end shortly and our next go around will be a min of 60 day to a max of 120 day rotations. As far as TDY's, again it depends on the unit. Some allow their current ops to be aggressive and pick up a lot of flying and some not so much. There has been a lot of TACC tours made available and our unit is keeping the bums very busy with those. Hope that helps.

Thanks, that does help.  When you are on TACC orders, are you paid as if you were on AD? Do you get some kind of pro-rated BAH while on TACC orders?..I talked briefly to one of the pilots at my future unit about it, but didn't have the time to get a full answer.
