ROTC UPT Selectees are going to be selecting there prefrences for bases this week or next depending on when AFPC opens up the database.  I have heard rumors that Moody closed it's UPT operations this last March.  Is this true?

We also would apperciate any advice or likes and dislikes as far as the rest of the bases go.

Thanks for your help!

Moody is not starting any more UPT classes, that is true. Pretty sure 07-15 was the last T-6 class at MY and they've already track selected.

For all the hate that it gets, Vance ain't that bad. It's not on the edge of the earth like XL or smell as bad as CB. We're close to Tulsa, OKC, and Wichita. Since it's a Joint base, it's kind of cool to go through T-6 training with Marines and Navy.

Bottom line, they're all going to have things that suck about them as well as things that are awesome. Either way, you're flying airplanes and they're paying you. It's freakin' awesome. Make it what you want it to. You can have either a great time or a shitty time no matter where you are.

Thanks quatro...any and all comments are helpful...anything posted is being sent to all the UPT selectees from my Det. We were wondering about the rumor that everyone who goes to NAS Whiting tracks heavys...obviously there are some of us who want to track 38s and fly fighters like every young zoomie select class...is this rumor substantiated or does Whiting get a normal drop like every other T-6 suad...if not what is the best base to apply to (besides ENJJPT at Shep) if you are wanting to fly fast some day?

I'd have to say the easiest way to get fighters (not easy), would be to go ENJPT (obvious), any other UPT base and then Whiting. We had two Whiting dudes in my T-38 class. One washed out and the other is flying Strike Eagles. He said he had a hard time adjusting to the AF-isms and it would have been easier if he would have done tweets(now T-6s)...you're more familiar w/ local ops, radio calls, and the AF way of flying. But, I know a bunch of bros who went through Whiting and they all loved it...must be the beach.

We (vance) get a lot of Whiting guys to T-38s (and T-1s, but I can only speak for the T-38 guys). They do seem to have it slightly more difficult at the beginning: the pattern is completely different, they've never heard of formal brief or stand up, among other things. I don't know if it's any "easier" to get a T-38 out of Whiting than it is any other base or not.

Either way, you go to a UPT base and work as hard as you can. If you're lucky enough to get a T-38, then shit hot. You may find out in T-6s that pulling Gs and doing loops and formation isn't the fun you thought it would be or maybe you find out it's what you always thought it would be and it's what you want to pursue. In either case, work your ass off and you'll end up getting what's 1) what the AF has planned and 2) what you deserve/want. There are some classes where the #1 guy doesn't want T-38s, he wants T-44s so he can go fly -130s or T-1s so he can fly C-17s.

There's almost no reason in trying to game the system at which UPT base has the most % of T-38/T-44/UH-1 track selects. It all varies on the other dudes in your flight and your IPs. If you go into UPT with a great attitude and wanting to help the bros out, you'll get a great assignment flying anything. It's all good man.

Do guys at Whiting/Pcola have about the same syllabus as the AF UPT bases? As in, doing virtually the same maneuvers and such?

From talking with the Whiting guys... Basically. If you don't do track the T-38, you don't do the Navy's "A-Forms" (advanced formation) where they do extended trail and some other stuff. I think when they do form, they only go up to like 60 deg bank in fingertip, though. They call fix to fixes "point to point"s, and there are some big differences in the avionics of the turbo mentor T-34 and the T-6. Last I heard, they were still doing NDB approaches... and I'm not sure if the thing had an ILS or not.

So, again.. From a dude who wasnt there, only from talking to a few Whiting guys that got -38s, that's the major differences (besides the biggest one... The overnugget pattern that the AF does is nothing like the VFR pattern the Navy does).

Thanks to all who posted on here...I put my preferences in today as 1) Whiting, 2) Vance, 3) Columbus, 4) Sheppard (even though it is based strictly on ENJJPT selection based on OOM) and last but not least Laughlin (sorry Ryno). I am hoping to get ENJJPT but no matter what I'll be excited and ready to lock it on wherever they send me. Thanks for the comments and insight...still got a PRK FCI in Feb and I have to get through senior year still. A buddy of mine brought up a good question today: Does anybody know if they pick base prefrences on OOM like they do everything else? I would think AFPC wouldn't discuss something like that but if anybody knows it would be interesting to know what they use.

From what I've heard in the past, it sounds like AFPC just tosses your name into the bucket and you just get assigned a base. Good luck, though.
