I looked at AFI48-123 and found that in Attachment 4 (A4.3.1.6.) sinutitis is a disqualifier:

"Chronic Sinusitis (473) unless mild in degree and considered unlikely to limit the examinee's flying activities."

On the Waiver Guide, Sinusitis isn't listed and I couldn't find any other information on it.  I have chronic sinusitis that's not mild in degree and will require an outpatient operation; I've been told by a retired Air Force ear, nose and throat specialist that it probably won't ruin my hopes of going to UPT (provided the surgery went smoothly, but it's a routine procedure so there's no worries).

Does anyone know if there is a possibility for a waiver even though Sinusitis isn't listed in the waiver guide?  I've read that there's a waiver for almost anything (especially for ANG which I'm trying to do), I am just hoping to get some opinions of how severely sinutis if viewed.  If you know another resource that I can use that would help, or even if there's somewhere else I should be asking this question.  Thanks for your help.

I can't say much about it since I have no clue about sinusitis and it's effects on a flying individual, but I will say that if you decided to have the procedure, make sure you get into contact with a recruiter or POC at the guard unit your shooting for to make sure that you are filling out the neccessary paperwork correctly and are going about the surgery correctly. I've heard stories of guys getting PRK and still being DQd at their physical because the paperwork wasn't filed correctly and therefore, the surgery was not done 'by AF standards." Be careful.

Good point.  I'll make sure to get with the pilot recruiter at the unit I'll be applying to before I go through with any surgery.

Sinusitis kind of causes similar problems as a deviated septum, for me it's like living with a stuffy nose (100% stuffed).  My maxillary glands are basically too large and shut off my passageway for air, so I just need to get them scraped smaller.  Most people use Breathe Right strips to open their passageway to keep from snoring, I use them to breathe better during the day a lot.  Sinusitis would be a problem with rapid decompression since I would have trapped gases at a different pressure that can't regulate itself fast enough, which is definately something that needs to be fixed if I were flying.  I'm curious about how serious an operation for that is viewed since there's no information in the waiver guide though.

I'm glad you responded, it may have saved me from screwing up the paperwork.  Thanks.
