I've been looking all over the net and searching tirelessly through AFI 36-2903 and all I can seem to find as far as what boots are flight approved is this...

"Mandatory for flight operations; the primary aircrew boots authorized in
AS016, are the FWU-3P, FWU-8/P, and the lightweight model 700, 770, and 790 Bellville® Aircrew
Boot. Lace-up zipper inserts may be used. Boots, flying, extreme cold, Sorrel Premium, Mukluks, as
well as vapor barrier thermal are authorized for wear during winter flight operations at the discretion
of the unit commander."

This is outdated because the boots listed are black/desert, not sage green.  I was issued a pair of sage green boots but they don't fit, before I buy a pair I want to make sure that they are "flight approved".  Is the Belleville 690 going to be my only option or are other companies producing flight approved boots that will survive the ABU deadline?  Also, are black boots still going to be authorized for wear with flight suits after the ABU deadline?

I tried a few pairs on and I like the Marauders a lot, they seem that they would be the most comfortable for flying because of the light weight and flexible heel.  I'm not going to go blow $100+ on something that I wont be able to wear.

Thanks in advance.

The Belleville 690s are the only sage green boots that I know of that are flight approved. I have the exact same pair (except that they are desert), and I can tell you that they're very comfortable after you wear them for about a week. As for black boots with flightsuits, they're still good to go, and hopefully always will be. I believe they're still issuing out the black, Belleville 700s before SUPT (the same style as the 690s and my 790s).

EDIT:  Not sure what your flight/student/whatever status is, but I would just wait until you get issued a pair.  If you're going to get a pair for free, there's no reason to go buy a pair yourself.  And if you DO buy yourself a pair, get black boots.  They look better.

The reason I was asking is that I just got my pilot slot fro ROTC.  I have a pair of Sage boots that I got with my ABUs but they don't fit so I was going to buy a new pair. (Marauders?)  Anyway I'll just hold off for now and wear my old black boots with my flight suit until UPT which is over a year away.  Mainly I was concerned with whether black boots will still be allowed after the ABU deadline, but I don't think that anyone knows that one yet.  Hopefully they will be allowed because the green boots and flight suit looks kind of silly.

Thanks for the info!

Yes, the black boots with flight suits will still be around after the ABU transition in 2011 (I think that's when it is). However, you'll still probably need to buy another pair of boots for your ABUs before UPT, because you'll be in ABUs while you're on casual status. And if your current boots don't fit, then you'll definitely need new ones.

So, if you're going to have to get new ones, then you might as well get a pair that are flight rated, because if you don't, and you finish up with causal, you'll probably never wear that pair again. But if you get a pair that you can fly in (whether you get sage or desert), you'll be able to wear them for years.

Here's the easy way to do this - take the free shit they'll give you when you get to UPT and use that.

Don't bother buying green boots for your flight suit, or for your ABUs for that matter. I'm positive that the marauders are not authorized for flight anyway. I suggest buying a pair of desert tan boots (Belleville does make a good pair) to wear with your ABUs and your desert flight suit if you ever go over to the AOR. Take the free black flyer boots they'll issue you to wear with your flight suit @ UPT. If you still don't want them, mail them to me... they're really nice once they're broken in.

Oh, and the only people I've seen wearing green boots w/ flight suits were O-4s or higher. You *might* not want to be that lieutenant that thinks he's special with his cool new green boots.
