Haha this is funny as hell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gix8L3fcBc&NR=1

Hope that never happens to me.  He failed that ride I bet...Let's blame on a malfunctioning knee board.

This was at VN. I'm not sure who the student was, but I definitely know who the IP was.

Lesson learned, though, on my LL check ride, I printed two maps and kept one in my G-suit pocket.

The bastards in the new syllabus, though, get to use HSD on the freakin' check ride, though. You could fly the entire route cranium's down.

Wait.. I may have said that incorrectly... I think the new -38 syllabus doesn't have a LL check, so the studs are allowed to use HSD on all of their LL sorties (before it was only on form LL).

I kinda feel bad for the stud. How he dropped his LL map, I don't know..... I had a death grip on my origami'd map with my throttle hand the whole flight and was constantly holding it up above the dash to make updates while flying.

OK, on my soap-container: I completley agree with how the EP/IP handled the situation. The stud should fly the jet until safety of flight dictates that the EP/IP needs to take control of the aircraft. If you get yourself in a bad position, an IP will teach you a lot more by letting/forcing you to fix the situation yourself. If you're flying a single-seat jet and you drop your map and/or are generally having a bad day, you won't have someone else there to fly the jet while you un-f*&# yourself. If you're flying a crewed aircraft, you have a whole bunch of dudes counting on you to overcome spatial-d and make a safe approach, get the gas in the middle of the Atlantic/Pacific, etc. so no matter how bad of a day you're having or what kind of bad position you put yourself in, you have to fly the jet, get the job done, and land safely. I learned that lesson on a flight in a similar way this stud did, and I'll never forget it.

Haha that is funny as hell...was that at ENJJPT? I would assume so since it was a Japanese exchange student pilot...I wonder how often that communication gap gets in the way...

I would assume so (that it was at ENJJPT). But that didn't seem like a language barrier, it seemed like a thick cranium barrier

There are no Japanese students at ENJJPT (Japan isn't a NATO country). The video also came out before EN transitioned over to the T-38C so it couldn't have been from Sheppard.

As for the communication barrier, most of the IPs at ENJJPT speak awesome english. It's a little difficult to understand some of the Italians at times, but I never had a communications problem when I went through. In the beginning some of the foreign students may be a little shaky on their english, but by the time you make it to -38s, language difficulties are virtually nonexistent.

In the stud's defense, there is no "OFF" position for Cabin Heat. Cabin Heat is a rheostat marked with temperatures (the Canopy Defog rheostat has an "OFF" position but the Cabin Heat doesn't). Part of the climbout checklist is to turn the Cabin Heat and Canopy Defog rheostats up all the way; this clears the moisture out of the air conditioning system before you reach altitude so you don't get pelted with ice crystals later on. During that time it's extremely noisy- in the beginning there's a lot of water coming out of the vent followed shortly thereafter by burning hot air. When the air is fully going it's hard to hear in the front, let alone the back, so IPs will yell (but by the time they start yelling you'll have already turned the rheostats back to normal settings).
