If you are placed into a casual status for an extended period of time is their any training you can accomplish prior to starting UPT.  Specifically is there a way to attend SERE Training at Fairchild while in casual?  What else if anything can you do to make sure your time on casual is spent learning what you need to know instead of being kept busy with menial tasks.  I also understand you can read up on BOLDFACE/OPS LIMITS but I mean what other than that can you do.

That's about it. You can't go to SERE or anything like that ahead of time. And you'll actually have a "job" while on casual. That will keep you busy to an extent.

Good luck!

Do they not send you to IFS, if appropriate?

They do. But it doesn't take forever to get 20-some hours or whatever the number is now. IFS is backed up now, apparently. The guys in my ENJJPT class who don't have their PPL are j   ust being sent to do it old-school style at a local FBO..

The best "training" you can do on casual status is to get all your ducks in a row so you have nothing to worry about but flying while you're going through UPT. A lot of dudes (especially Zoomies) lived the dorm life in college and have never lived on their own or learned to cook for themselves. The adjustment to UPT is hard enough, and if you have to add adjustments to other stuff on top of that you'll just make life more difficult. If you were a striver in college and then zoom through IFT and any additional training while on casual, the possibility of burning-out during UPT could very well be something to think about. My advice to you and any other bubba on casual status is to adjust to the bachelor life (or married life for you unfortunate ones), blow off steam, enjoy yourself, and re-energize during casual so you're ready to go when your UPT class starts.

Ask your commander to go to ASBC and get it out of the way for PME. When I was in, ASBC was just starting out and did not have to go. Had friends that were sitting Casual at a UPT base that went. Got back and classed up about 3-4 weeks after returning.

Unfortunately I'm already active duty so I've been through ASBC and will have my PPL within a few weeks (weather permitting). Does anyone know where I can look up a class (Vance 09-06) and find out when it actually starts? Or someone I can call who will actually know for sure the answer? I've been told it might start as late as next March. If that's the case there is enough time between know and then the practically finish UPT much less just "get my ducks in a row."

I've heard this rumor that in the next year or so, UPT selects will do causal at their respective UPT base. I think this is a pretty good idea, we'll see if it's really a rumor.

I think that would be a great idea! Would eliminate the need to move from the casual base to the UPT base. I like it!

Eliminating the move from your casual base also eliminates a nice chunk of change with dislocation allowance, the TDY money, and the chance to take an interest free loan. You can double that cash by doing a casual job. Lest ye forget, or in case you don't know, the locations for UPT leave a bit to be desired. I'm not sure I'd volunteer for Del Rio for an extra year or however long its taking these days when I could sign up for any number of Air Force locations without being roped into one particular crappy set of locations by an AFSC. Enjoy the opportunity to live somewhere nice before the Air Force greatly trims down your choices both in UPT and afterwards when you're flying the B-1 and stuck in Abilene. Or stuck at Pope or Altus. Or Clovis, New Mexico for the love of all that is holy! Or when you FAIP and spend another three wonderful years in Enid. Or when you deploy and spend the majority of the year in some sandy shit hole eating chow hall food with the fresh scent of the shitter fields fresh in your nostrils. Try to find some place nice and go live there is my advice.

But don't let me try to convince you not to rush off joyfully for Del Rio and all its many advantages.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

Not at all! I see your point and it is well taken. I was enlisted before and have had my fair share of sandy shittiness and what not.

That is a good point, though, T6. Might as well take advantage of the last free time you'll have for a year or so before UPT steals the next year of your life away. Good call.

Doesn't really matter where we go. Almost all the bases I heard of r pretty sh*tty (at least casual). We'll go where they tell us to go. Good luck to those competing. <---I applied for ENJJPT; causual at Sheppard won't be fun if I get it.

Is there any way to pick a base for casual status? My girlfriend is stationed in Bethesda, MD and I would really like to be a lot closer. It seems like they would have way too many Lts doing not much at all the UPT bases if you are suposed to go there right away.

Thanks
