Well, I spoke to my recruiter today about my application to the 09OT03 board. Here is what my package looked like:
Flight Experience:
350 Hours (ASEL and AMEL)
Commercial Pilot
Instrument Rating
Advanced Ground Instructor
(CFI in training)
AFOQT Scores:
Pilot – 99, Nav – 97, Verbal – 99, Academic – 99, Quantitative – 92
PCSM
99
Excellent officer interview, the Lt. Col. I interviewed with said “I wish I could offer you the job right now” and “I would be getting nothing but “outstanding” marks on all criteria of the interview evaluation sheet”.
Graduated college with a BS in Aviation Technology, 3.17 GPA. Captain of the Flight Team while I was a student, now a paid employee of the college teaching the class. Lots of awards from competing with the flight team including 1st place in our region in the Simulator event two years in a row. Numerous other volunteer work / leadership roles.
Letters of Recommendation from my flight instructor (a retired USAF Colonel), teachers who flew for the USAF, Navy, and Coast Guard, and a current USAF Captain (girlfriend’s sister).
I was not selected for entrance into OTS/UPT. The recruiter (who I am seriously appalled with the lack of interest and willingness to return phone calls and emails) said there weren’t any pilot slots awarded to the applicants he was responsible for as a result of the 09OT03 board. I don’t want to crush anybody else’s dreams, but im pretty crushed at the moment. Just needed to vent because this was my second application, and I am unsure if merely adding the CFI to my package will warrant a waiver for a third application. Wish everybody else who wants to fly for the Air Force better luck than I have had. Never wanted to do anything else for a career but serve my country by flying for the United States Air Force….

Dude you sound like a stand-up guy, you really gonna let a half-assed recruiter stand in your way? Keep applying to the OTS boards, but start sending out apps to guard/reserve units around the country. Do as much as you can to optimize your chances. They'll pick up on your persistance... The harder the struggle, the sweeter the reward. Nothing great ever comes without a struggle... |

Thanks for the post TailWind. I certainly dont intend to give up, i am going to keep fighting, just a little discouraged. Im going to start by finishing up my CFI, and petition for the 3rd application waiver. And i will have to start reading about the application process to guard/reserve again, its been about a year since ive read about other alternatives. |

Dude, just try again. You might be surprised how many of us faced similar roadblocks during our attempts to fly USAF airplanes...we just got over it, picked up, and applied again. |

Stop being a wuss and crying about it. Keep applying. You need to outlast the competition. If you really want to fly bad enough go join a guard unit. It will get your foot in the door. If your not a total door knob you can probably get picked up somewhere. Guess what, there are hundreds of kids trying to do what you are doing. Being the captain of the flight team in college doesn't mean a whole lot when you are interviewing with a squadron full of DFC winners. Also, letters from O-6's are usually viewed with suspicion. Most AF O-6's sucked a lot of cock and stepped on a lot of their bros to make rank. Be careful who writes a rec for you. If you are tough enough. go join the Marines, they willl guarantee you a flight slot if you survive OCS. Here's another hint, focus on having a good personality that people will want ot be around for 20 years. People with flying skills are a dime a dozen, it is personality, or a good bar act, that will break you out. |

Thanks for the replies. As far as ive been told, a person gets two shots at applying for a pilot slot through OTS and thats it, with the exception of a waiver for a third application. Am I missing something? Everyone here says keep trying and damn straight im going to! |

That really sucks you did not get picked, you seem like you had a real strong package. I wouldn't feel too bad at not getting picked this time though, my recruiter told me they were selecting a very, very small number of pilots in this board. Did you have those same numbers when you applied the first time? Also have you seriously considered other branches like the Navy, or are you dead set on the Air Force? Either way you seem like a smart dude and you have got a lot going for you, and I'm sure you will look back on this and see it was just a small obstacle you had over come to get where you wanted. Good luck! |

Crushed, I don't know the answer about a maximum number of times you can apply to the OTS board (sounds like a perfect question for the experts over at www.airforceots.com, though), but even if that's true there are plenty of ANG and Reserve units you could pledge later if needed. |

Well, I did some research for you and it appears you were competing with 797 other individuals in the OTS board, and only 200 were selected... That's a 25% selection ratio! (if you'd like to read on... http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id...923)
That seriously sucks ass because it seems like you're qualified, (if not over-qualified), for where you seek to tread... I'm really curious what those 200 had over your stats, but I guess that's just water under the bridge at this point.
I'd say keep at it, STAY POSITIVE, and continue to better yourself in the process. AF Reserves and ANG aren't bad options to consider either. Regardless, I hope things work out for you. If you wouldn't mind, please keep us posted on what happens with your waiver ordeal. |

How old are you? If you're 25-ish, there are still plenty of other opportunities before you get 'too old'. I had about 7 "no" answers on various selection boards in both ROTC and on active duty for pilot training before I got a "yes". |

Crushed...
I'm a 09ot03 pilot select and your scores/application matches and/or beats mine in many areas. My stats were
AFOQT: 99/99/99/97/96 , PCSM: 93
57 flight hours, PPL
LOR: USAF 0-7, 3X NAVY 0-6 (all of whom know me very well, come from a big military area)
Excellent Interview also...
There's no reason, based on what you posted that you should not have gotten selected. Did you have any legal issues that needed waivers, any medical issues at MEPS, or any other black marks in your application? If not you need to get another recruiter, yours didn't do his/her job somehow and might've neglected to do something important having to do with your package. Also, item 22 on the Form 56 (the mission statement on why you want a commission) I've heard that a lot of people who don't get selected screw up this important part of the application by putting too much emphasis on wanting to be a pilot, neglecting to emphasize why they want to be Air Force Officers. My understanding is that the USAF wants officers first, pilots second and this part of your app should reflect that. Anyways, get that waiver and try again. Persistence will pay off... |

I had the exact thing happen to me. I applied to OTS Air Force active duty with very very similar stats only much more flight experience and ratings and was told I was an outstanding applicant and had an outstanding interview as well as packet. I too was the coach of our flight team and was involved in many leadership positions. I was denied from active duty, 3 days later I had a package together with an ANG unit and got the pilot slot.
DO NOT GIVE UP.
I made it very clear in my interview that I will not give up on being hired. You may not hire me this year, but I will keep bettering myself, keep getting more experience, and keep joining leadership positions until I am hired.
I am extremely, extremely happy I did not get picked up by active duty OTS. I now am sitting with an F16 slot and know where I will be living as well as who I will be working with.
Dont give up. It only took me two applications. |

I have a small scarred tissue in my right eye that lowers the visual acuity just a bit. I read in the waiver list that my condition could be waiverable and i see some of these other pilots that have gotten a waiver for lowered vision acuity. Do i have a better chance of receiving a waiver for UPT through a guard unit? |
