My recruiter informed me that there are only two pilot selection boards per year. One is in April which already had the stuff due in March, and the other sometime real late in the year I believe either October or November. Anyway, my recruiter did not start working on my stuff until early March even though I had all my paperwork and tests taken and missed the deadline to turn everything in. My problem is that I am a recent grad, without a job, and my recruiter said that my stuff looks good for the next board and I have a high chance of getting selected, and as much as I think it is worth waiting I do not have the financial resources to wait until early next year to leave due to student loan repayments and all all the other financial obligations I have. Anybody have any suggestions to what I should do next? Also, can anyone else confirm that there are only two boards this year, because I feel like I cannot always take my recruiters word on everything for obvious reasons. Thanks guys! |

Have you actually started looking for a job and cant find one or are you a recent grad who was hopeing to start his AF career right away that you haven't even given it much thought? Just start applying, if they ask about your future, explain to them what your plans are. Doesn't sound like there is much other choice than that. |

Yes, only two rated boards in calendar year 2009 - the April one (March deadline that's passed) and one in October (Sept deadline) (and it's actully the first board in FY10, because the USAF FY starts 1 Oct). That's the latest I got; it might have changed - the AF Recruiting Service moved its materials behind the AF Portal so you have to have some sort of air force affiliation to access it now. As far as what to do, I tend to agree with Cajun - just keep applying to other jobs so you have some way to pay the bills and then leave it if you get picked up for the USAF. Also, you ought to consider applying for Air National Guard/AF Reserve UPT boards... |

Im going to do what you both suggested and try to find a job around here to kill time until October. Like I said my recruiter told me that my chances were good of making it but as I also said I am to the point where I really do not believe much of what she tells me. I thought about possibly applying to the Navy, but I really want the Air Force because I grew up around it. Can people give me an honest opinion on what you think my chances are being selected are so I can be sure I am making the right decision by waiting around for so long. Here is my info: AFOQT: Pilot(97) Nav(90) Quantitative(88) Verbal(75) Academic Aptitude(89) PCSM: 96, will be a 97 with updated flight time Have my PPL 3.2 GPA degree in marketing, 3.2 GPA for Masters in Bus. Admin. I really would appreciate any feedback either way because if my chance arent pretty close to a sure thing I will continue exploring my other options. Thanks for you guys help. |

They put you up on an Ots board or a special reserve Ots board with their approval and desire to hire you...not sure how many or how often these are but I think like 2 or 3 times a year. From what I've heard these are more of just a technicality where the Reserve chain of command makes sure you are fit to commission and all the stuff that comes with that. Its basically like putting in an after the fact OTS application...then from there barring you having robbed a bank or sold drugs and not telling your unit you will be good to go.
Another way I've heard of doing the reserve sts is too get a hold of a reserve recruiter and let them know your intentions and desires. They can put you up to a reserve OTS board without a specific unit sponsoring you and then pimp you to hiring units as a qualified and ready to roll candidate. I'm not sure If you get to then rush and try and pick a desired unit or if you are just subject to whoever wants you? Maybe someone knows this or you could hit up a recruiter and get back to us.
That was my understanding of the process from when I was rushing guard and reserve units.

OK so after a reserve unit chooses you for their pilot slot, as long as you don't screw it up, it's a pretty straight shot to OTS? You still meet a board, but that's just a formality at that point? You could technically still get turned down, but it's not likely? |

From my understanding yes to all 3 questions. You can call a recruiter and double check.

Yea p didn't get much feedback from them either...calling, rushing, and applying to the individual units is probably the better game plan.

Well I'm writing for my brother who was picked up by the reserve unit already for the pilot spot but doesn't know all the details and can't get a hold of the information. I directed him here so hopefully that's the answer he's looking for. |
