I would really like some feedback as to my chances of getting into OTS as pilot rated?
Age: 21
Education: B.S. Political Science and B.S. History (fell one class from a degree in Mathematics hence the B.S.)- GPA 2.9
PCSM: 50
AFOQT Scores
Pilot- 94
NAV- 85
A.A.- 70
Verbal- 44
Quant.- 84
I know that I have low Verbal scores and PCSM, but is it really going to stop me from being accepted. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Cali, if you have a 50 PCSM why isn't that reflected in your stats? Secondly, how could you get a 50 PCSM with a 94 Pilot AFOQT score and 10 flight hours? Did you take the TBAS? I don't think you could do that poorly on the TBAS to have such a low PCSM (if so retake the TBAS). |

Ya I took the TBAS. I don't know how I did so bad. The first portion with the UAV was the killer. I was doing well on it and then it just went to shit. So are you saying that I won't get a pilot slot with a low PCSM? |

OTS is extremely competitive, and the PCSM is the primary method they will use to determine how likely it is that you will succeed in the cockpit. You have a score of 50 out of a possible 100 (unless there's some sort of error). Think of that as a test score... when it comes to basic flight aptitude, the Air Force is going to look at that 50 as a "failing" grade. You would have to be a superstar in all other aspects of your board to get a slot with that score, at least from my experience with the scores of people who get selected (and don't get selected) for an OTS pilot slot. My advice would be to look into your PCSM score. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that someone made an error recording your scores. Like Ryno said, with a 94 pilot score on the AFOQT and 10 flight hours, you would have had to bomb the TBAS to get a 50 PCSM. If your score is correct, you HAVE to retake the TBAS if you want to be competitive for an OTS pilot slot. The only real way to prep for that is to play lots of video games and work on smooth analog conrol. Good luck! |

ROB on top of what Ryno said: Did you read the ANG pilot slot page on this site? Did you look on there and other sites for scores of dudes who are getting picked up? Do you look on the forums for timelines of dudes applying, interviewing, getting hired etc? Ok rant off...I was at my FC1 without Internet access and was just laughing my ass off when my crackberry went off with your PMs which you can't respond to over the phone yet. I know you are antsy and excited and planned on PMing you from your forum posts when I got a chance. Anyway, IF you have done the above you know every guard unit is different. With that said, if you want to fly in the guard, esspically fighters, you need to apply to any and all units across the country that are hiring. Every unit is your "favorite" and "dream airframe" and you take what you can get...at the end of the day you will be getting 2 Million bones worth of training and wearing AF wings...personally I would live in Guam, Alaska, North Dakota to fly for the AF and that is the attitude and persistence you need. Your scores and stats look good...but so do 15-20 dudes out of the 100 that apply to every guard fighter unit board. Be proud of your stats but understand you gotta want that Fvcking slot. If you don't get hired here you need to apply to the next unit and next board you can...check the guard pages here, on other AF sites, shit I googled and just cold called units when I was trying to get hired. Go and "rush" units you are going to apply to by showing up at their UTAs (drill weekends) and chilling at the bar...they will know why you are there...just take a bottle of booze and/or a case of nice beer and just kick it. They are going to hire the dude who fits in the best out of the 15-20 who have the stats. They want to hire someone who they can expect to make it through UPT with ever growing animosity towards guard dudes who are "guaranteed" fighters when no one on Active Duty is getting a chance to "earn" them. They want to hire someone they can fly with, go TDY with, drink with, have the wife and kids around for 15-20 years. So just work hard and go visit the units you are applying at. I do know that part of the reason I got hired was b/c I'm 23...I'm young and they can expect a lot of years out of me. Being 27 might hurt you a little but I'm not sure and I would think you can make up for it if they like you. I specifically contacted a pilot I had met at football flyover my Soph year of college and he invited me on a Fri, Sat to party. I got a hotel, brought a bottle of Jeremiah Weed and a case of Wheat Beer to the squadron around 4 on Friday afternoon, partied with them at the squadron bar into the night, went out to the bars and partied with them all weekend...i.e. rushing. I submitted my app package a couple of weeks later and here is my timeline: JUL 08: Rushed and Applied AUG: Notified of interview (had 10 of us up for a weekend interview and party at one of the pilots house later that night) SEP 08: Interviewed 9/11/2008: Hired (Will never forget this day and/or what I was doing and who I was with when I got the "do you wanna fly for us call." JoyStik that is a shout out) NOV 08: Enlisted/started all the paperwork JAN 09: Approval from NGB/FC1 at Brooks Dates 7 FEB 09: AMS Dates 21 FEB 09: FC1 MFS at Brooks 24 FEB 09: IFS/UPT Dates and Location 16 MAR 09: AMS 27 MAY 09: IFS 16 AUG 09: RNLD to Sheppard 31 AUG 09: ENJJPT class 10-08 Start date Hope that helps. Good Luck and keep us posted. |

If you keep your GPA at 3.5 or higher I'd give you a 85% chance. I think they like technical degrees at OTS but that may have changed. Keeping your GPA up matters a lot more for OTS though especially with a non-tech degree (at least that's my dated impression). |

The stigma put on Army pilots is very funny. I knew it was there but dang! I was not even logged into the website and getting made fun of. As an Apache Longbow pilot myself I find this to be far from the truth and sad. The Apache community used to be the top 5% of all Army aviators, well at least when I went through it was. As a pilot in command of the most advanced helicopter in the world, which by the way is more advanced than some of today’s fighter jets, It is real easy to sky cop from 10-15,000 ft while I am down less than 150ft dodging towers, wires, A/C, bullets and killing the enemy at the same time. Anyway that being said I have no hard feelings which is why I am currently working towards joining your ranks.
I was just wondering if my career flying attack choppers will help. I have 2000 hours, with 1000 in combat. I have my multi engine rotor wing commercial license and will have my fixed wing upon return from my current deployment and I will finish my degree soon after getting out of the Army. I have met prior Army pilots who have switched over so I know it’s possible. I understand the odds are not in my favor but I will try all options until there are none. Thanks up front and hope to hear from everyone.

Why don't you update your stats to reflect your PCSM? It's pretty worthless to have that link in your signature block if it shows shitty information don't you think?
Yeah, I don't think you'll get a pilot slot with that PCSM. Just my guess. |

It was when I registered for the site, there was a paragraph talking about Army pilots and a YouTube video showing the worst engagement I have seen. Below that in the paragraph it said the site welcomes us but we will probably spell check it anyway. It doesn't make me mad I just think it's sad that people see it that way. So any opinions on my questions above?

As far as will your flying background help...it certainly won't hurt. If you try for a Guard or Reserve gig it will help I'm sure. What type of route are you looking into to go Green to Blue? |
